Lauren Boebert 'torched' for blaming Social Security backlog on 'delinquent' workers

U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, best known outside her home state for 'Beetlejuice' audience antics, was “torched” Wednesday by a Social Security Administration official who lashed out when she accused his staff of laziness, new video shows.

Boebert tried to blame the agency's mounting backlog on “delinquent employees” who worked from home and a government office that failed to monitor their work, but as Democratic strategist Sawyer Hackett noted, the conversation didn't go according to plan.

“Lauren Boebert [gets] torched by a Social Security Administration official after she calls agency employees lazy,” Hackett wrote. “He uses her dumb question to highlight GOP slashing the Social Security budget.”

As the video shows, Boebert and Oren McKnelly exchanged testy words over a Social Security application backlog that the Colorado Republican says has mounted to 107,000.

“We’ve been historically underfunded for a number of years now,” McKnelly tells Boebert.

“I don’t think you’re underfunded,” snaps Boebert. “You’re funded at the Nancy Pelosi levels, at the Democrat levels, we just continued that same funding.”

The problem, says McKnelly, is that while funding has remained level, beneficiaries increased by 8 million over the past decade and staffing levels have dropped.

“That’s a math problem,” McKnelly told the Republican lawmaker. “If you have those workloads increasing and you don’t have the staff to take care of those workloads, you’re going to have the backlogs you’re talking about.”

X viewers of the viral video, since seen more than 64,000 times, took umbrage with Boebert’s characterization of remote workers as “delinquents” and mocked her math skills.

"As soon as the Administrator said math, Lauren was lost," a user named Bob Trent wrote.

Another wrote, "He should have just responded 'Our employees work far more hours and days than our members of Congress.'"
