The Mets Are Adding a Former Yankee to the Rotation on a One-Year Deal, per Report

0

The Mets signed pitcher Luis Severino on a one-year, $13 million deal, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Wednesday.

This is the Mets’ first pitching move of the offseason following a rough season on the mound. The pitching staff finished 2023 with an overall 4.30 ERA.

Severino spent the last eight seasons across New York City with the Yankees. This past year he struggled with a career-worst 6.65 ERA in 19 games. His 2023 season ended early after he sustained a high-grade left oblique strain on Sept. 8.

After clocking two consecutive All-Star seasons in 2017–18, Severino’s next two seasons were clouded with injuries. The pitcher started in just three games in 2019 due to right shoulder rotator cuff inflammation and a grade 2 lat strain. He underwent Tommy John surgery the following year, which caused him to miss the entire 2020 season. In ‘21, he appeared in just four games.

The Mets started 2023 with All-Star pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, but traded both of them away before the deadline. The team finished fourth in the NL East with a 75–87 record.
