Recap: Ingemann, Vees shutout Smoke Eaters Wednesday

PENTICTON, BC. – The Penticton Vees are back in the win column after their 5-0 shutout victory over the Trail Smoke Eaters, Wednesday at the SOEC in Penticton.

Penticton’s win improves their record to 5-0 when coming off a loss, and they move five points ahead of the Vipers for top spot in the Interior Division. Vernon lost to West Kelowna Wednesday night.

The Vees are still perfect at home, now 9-0 at the SOEC and have won 51 consecutive home games dating back to April 1, 2022. Penticton has also recorded a point in 20 straight games (16-0-2-2).

Ryan MacPherson and Simon Meier each had a goal and an assist in the win. Connor MacPherson and Larry Keenan each had two helpers. Conyr Hellyer, Callum Arnott, and Billy Renfrew also scored.

Will Ingemann picked up his second shutout of the season, as he stopped all 22 shots fired his way. Ingemann now has 12 wins in 15 games and has yet to lose in regulation. He also is first in the BC Hockey League in goals-against average (1.68), second in save percentage (.932), and second in shutouts (2).

Hellyer and Arnott scored in the opening frame, as the Vees led 2-0 after 20 minutes. Hellyer broke the ice at 11:29, as he put the Vees up 1-0 on his sixth of the season. His goal setup by Larry Keenan, who made a great drop pass to the trailing Hellyer. Arnott doubled the Vees lead with his power play goal at 14:55, as he squeezed his shot under the goalie’s pad.

In the second period, Meier scored the lone goal late. Meier’s sixth at 13:44 made it 3-0 for Penticton. He scored from the face-off circle after a drop pass from Ryan MacPherson.

In the final Frame, Renfrew and Ryan MacPherson found the back of the net to put the game out of reach. Renfrew tipped in Nolan Stevenson’s point shot to make it 4-0 Vees at 8:06. His fifth goal of the season.

MacPherson capped off the scoring with his first goal at the SOEC this season. Ryan scored on a one-timer after a pass from his brother Connor out from behind the net. His 9th made it 5-0 at 15:19.

The Vees set a new season high with their 53 shots Wednesday. They had 21 shots in the first period, which surpassed their previous high of 17.
