WMO confirms 2023 to be warmest year on record, replacing the previous record-holder 2016
The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) confirms that 2023 is set to be the warmest year on record, with the global mean temperature reaching 1.40 (± 0.12) degree Celsius above the pre-industrial level. The year has shattered climate records and experienced extreme weather events, leaving devastation in its wake. The warming El Niño event of this year is expected to further fuel the heat in 2024. The WMO's State of the Global Climate report also highlights the alarming rise in carbon dioxide levels and the accelerated rate of sea level rise.
