Journalist claims club have now deemed Spurs player ‘too expensive’
De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij says that Ajax are set to call off their pursuit of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg since the midfielder has been deemed too expensive for the club.
Hojbjerg’s has fallen out of favour at Tottenham since Ange Postecoglou arrived through the door in the summer and plenty of outlets over the last couple of months have indicated that the Dane’s time at the North London club is expected to come to an end in January.
Various Italian publications have reported recently that the 28-year-old is one of the names at the top of Juventus’ wishlist (CalcioMercato) while some reports in the British press have suggested that Fulham could make a move for the former Southampton man if they lose Joao Palhinha (90 min).
Last week, it emerged that the Tottenham man has emerged as a target for Ajax, who are alleged to be keen on reinforcing their midfielder when the transfer window reopens (VI).
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is too expensive for Ajax
Verweij has now said that while the Eredivisie giants did take a close look at Hojbjerg, the Spurs star has been deemed too expensive by the club.
The journalist said on Voetbal Primeur: “Ajax wants a controlling midfielder and preferably a right winger. Then players really have to be sold.
“There is a small pot, so they could get someone. The name of Højbjerg from Tottenham Hotspur is mentioned, but it is probably much too expensive. Apparently, a club recently offered twenty million. I don’t think he will be signed.”
Spurs Web Opinion
With Hojbjerg having just 18 months to run on his contract and the Dane clearly not suited to Postecoglou’s methods, I believe that Spurs will be ready to accept a cut-price fee for the player in January.
However, Ange might insist on bringing another midfielder through the door before green-lighting Hojbjerg’s departure, given that Bissouma and Sarr will not be available during AFCON.
