Journalist says Newcastle are ‘genuinely interested’ in signing Spurs-linked forward
Journalist Dean Jones has said that Newcastle United hold a concrete interest in Paris Saint-Germain starlet Hugo Ekitike, who has been mooted as a target for Tottenham Hotspur.
It seemed like a real coup for PSG when they snapped up Ekitike for €35m (£30.3) in the summer of 2022 but the striker has not managed to fulfil his potential in Paris.
The player was mooted as a target for Tottenham earlier this year (Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness) and it was suggested during the summer transfer window that the Lilywhites were competing with Newcastle United for the 21-year-old’s signature (But Football).
The centre-forward stayed put at Princes Park in the summer and has found game time extremely hard to come by this season under Luis Enrique, having made just one appearance so far in 2023-24 (Transfermarkt).
In his column on Football Insider last week, journalist Pete O’Rourke claimed that both West Ham and Newcastle are interested in a January move for Ekitike, who is expected to be available on loan.
Could Newcastle and Spurs both move for Ekitike?
Jones has now confirmed that the Magpies are indeed seriously considering a move for the France Under-20 international.
The journalist told GiveMeSport: “The situation around Ekitike is interesting because Newcastle still genuinely interested him.
“They had a long-standing interest in him previously, and I don’t think the fact that he didn’t choose them last time around will especially go against him or anything if they choose to pursue this avenue.
I think that there is a concern at Newcastle about being left short in attack in the new year, and I think that they’re starting to look towards ways that they could reinvent that attack or at least bolster it up.
“Since Ekitike is not getting game time at PSG, he’s emerging as a player they’ve got well-sourced reports on in scouting.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Since the summer, there has not really been any suggestion that Spurs are expected to reignite their interest in Etikete. It appears as if Tottenham’s interest in the PSG striker has now cooled.
