Man taken into custody after east Austin SWAT call
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Police said they took a man into custody Thursday afternoon after an hours-long call in east Austin that involved a SWAT response.
Sgt. Destiny Silva with the Austin Police Department confirmed officers arrested a suspect after she said he would not leave a home in the 2400 block of Santa Rita Street and at one point fired a shot toward the area where the SWAT vehicle was parked. Police did not return fire, though, she said.
Police initially responded at about 5:57 a.m. when someone called 911 to report a man assaulting a woman. Officers arrived about five minutes later and talked to both people. Police said it did not appear at that time there was an "imminent threat" to the community. However, the man reportedly went into a house and would not leave. Because he possibly had a gun, that's when police called SWAT to assist.
According to police, the suspect later fired a shot at responding officers, but no one got hurt. A hostage negotiator tried to make contact with the man, and he eventually left the house "without further incident," police said.
Police said they reopened the streets near the house in east Austin at about 4 p.m. and soon cleared the scene.
Police did not share the name of the suspect Thursday, but they said he will face charges for felon in possession of a firearm, family violence and possibly more offenses.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call the Austin Police Department's aggravated assault unit at 512-974-4254.
