In the depths of captivity in Gaza, they formed an unlikely but prized friendship. Danielle Aloni and her 5-year-old daughter Emilia had been seized from a kibbutz by Hamas in its Oct. 7 rampage into southern Israel. Nutthawaree Munkan, a Thai agricultural worker, was abducted the same day. The three became close during their seven weeks' captivity in Gaza. They were freed on Friday under the temporary cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. For a few minutes this week, they put aside the trauma of their shared ordeal to celebrate their new friendship, the Alonis speaking in Hebrew, Nutthawaree in Thai. Their joy transcended language.
