According to the interlocutor of the agency, the Russians got access to internal communications in the American department. The attack was part of a campaign that also compromised the systems of the US Treasury Department and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is responsible for border security, cybersecurity, and more recently, the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Earlier, Russian hackers were accused of hacking the system of the US Treasury and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. The attack was allegedly carried out by a group of hackers APT29 (Cozy Bear), which allegedly works for the Russian authorities.
The Moscow Embassy in Washington called the attempts to accuse Russia of hacker attacks groundless and stated that such attacks in the information space contradict the principles of the country’s foreign policy, its national interests and understanding of how relations between states are built.
