Doctor and TV presenter Alexander Myasnikov explained why he considers vaccination of elderly people against COVID-19 necessary. In an interview with Deutsche Welle, he explained that the vaccine prevents the severe course of the disease, which is most often encountered by the elderly.

“We are delivering vaccines to young people with the hope of creating herd immunity and breaking the chain of infections. 98 percent of COVID victims are 75 plus. We hope to prevent severe illness and death with a vaccine. After all, people die mainly with oncology, diabetes, obesity, lung problems, ”said Myasnikov.

There is a twofold situation, the doctor notes: on the one hand, such people need the vaccine more than others, on the other, they already have impaired immunity. “This means, most likely, we will face some problems, starting to vaccinate them en masse. But personally I have no pessimistic expectations, ”concluded the doctor.

Myasnikov explained why people are skeptical about coronavirus vaccination. “I will answer absolutely honestly, because initially I myself was against vaccination. It seemed to me that it could be risky due to the super-short time frame in which the drug is being developed, ”he began. He called the development of such drugs in such a short time a triumph of world science.

The TV presenter says that he does not understand the reproaches towards the Russian vaccine. The same claims can be made to other countries developing a vaccine against COVID. “All of them have one postulate: about 40 thousand subjects are involved. To the remark: “your vaccine is not ready,” I can only answer – “and yours?” – noted the head physician of the Moscow City Clinical Hospital No. 71.

On December 26, the Russian Ministry of Health approved the use of the Russian drug Sputnik V for vaccination of people over 60 years old. The ministry said that the safety of the vaccine for senior citizens was confirmed during the examination.
